Earl of Mornington

Earl of Mornington, an Irish hereditary peerage in the Peerage of Ireland, which is supported by the Wellesley family and today is one of subsidiary title of the Duke of Wellington.

Award

The title was for Garret Wellesley, 2nd Baron Mornington, father of the famous Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, created in 1760. This was a major philanthropist of his time.

Subordinate title

The subsidiary title of the Earl of Mornington are Viscount Wellesley, of Dangan Castle in the County of Meath, ( created 1760) and Baron Mornington ( created in 1746 ), both in the Peerage of Ireland.

More titles

The second Earl, Richard Wellesley, in 1797 the title Baron Wellesley, of Wellesley was awarded in the County of Somerset, in the Peerage of Great Britain, who had a seat in the House of Lords result. In 1799 he was raised to Marquess Wellesley, of Norragh, in the Peerage of Ireland. Both titles extinguished when he died in 1842 without surviving male descendant.

The third Earl, William Wellesley - Pole, was charged in 1821 for Baron Maryborough, of Maryborough in the Queen 's County in the Irish nobility. This title became extinct with the death of his grandson, the fifth Earl, 1863.

After the death of the fifth Earl of titles fell to the Dukes of Wellington, who wear it to this day. It is now run as a courtesy title by the eldest son of the heir title.
