Durand is a small town and the administrative seat of Pepin County in the western part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2000, Durand had 1968 inhabitants.

Geography

Durand is located at 44 ° 37'43 " north latitude and 91 ° 57'42 " west longitude and extending over 4.4 km ², spread over 4.1 km ² land and 0.3 km ² water surface.

Durand is located on the east bank of the Chippewa River, approximately 30 km north of its confluence with the Mississippi River. This forms the border with the neighboring state of Minnesota.

By Durand leads from the east coming to the U.S. Highway 10, which meets in the town center on Wisconsin Highway 25. About a bridge over the Chippewa River both leave the city together in a westerly direction.

The nearest large towns are Eau Claire ( 52.4 kilometers north-east ), La Crosse ( 130 km southeast ), Rochester, Minnesota ( 99.7 km southwest ) and the Twin Cities ( Minneapolis and Saint Paul ) in Minnesota (113 km north-west ).

History

The first white settlers arrived in 1856 in the area around the present town. The settlement was declared a town in 1887.

The original book for the television series Little House was written by the originating from the area Laura Ingalls Wilder based on actual experiences from their childhood.

Demographic data

In the census of 2000 a population of 1,968 was determined. These were distributed among 829 households in 509 families. The population density was 480.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 887 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 216.6 per square kilometer buildings.

The population was in 2000 from 98.9 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native Americans, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.1 % other. 0.5 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 0.2 percent of the population consisted of Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.

24.8 percent were under 18 years, 7.8 percent between 18 to 24, 24.4 percent of 25-44, 19.9 percent from 45 to 64 and 23.1 percent 65 and older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females were statistically 90.3 men in the over 18 -year-olds 87.5.
