Durg (Hindi दुर्ग, Durg ) is a city in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh with approximately 270,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ). It is the administrative seat of the district of Durg. The city is located east of the river Seonath. Together with the city of Bhilai, it forms the agglomeration Durg - Bhilai with approximately one million inhabitants.

Geography

Durg is located in the southwestern part of Chhattisgarh, in the plain, about 35 kilometers east of Raipur, the capital of the state, and 11 kilometers southwest of Bhilai. Durg is situated on the river Seonath, a tributary of the Mahanadi. The original name of the region was Shiva Durg.

History

Durg was part of ancient India to the Kingdom of Kosala. The name means strong and could indicate that Durg was a particularly fortified place in Kosala, which is a fortress ( garh ). The city was probably founded in the 10th century.

Demography

Durg had 2001 231.182 inhabitants in the year. The male population has a share of 51 percent of the female by 49 percent. Durg has a literacy rate of 72 percent, higher than the national average increase of 59.5 percent; in men it is 79 percent among women at 65 per cent. In Durg 13 percent of the population are under the age of six years.
