History

It is believed that prior to the discovery of New Zealand by Europeans Māori during the hunt for the then largest bird of the country, the Moa, at times lived on the shores of the Sound.

The Dusky Sound was first discovered by the Europeans by James Cook, who gave his name still valid today on February 13, 1770 on his first trip to New Zealand the Sound. In Cook's second expedition he explored the Sound over two months, set up workshops and an observatory. The Dusky Sound was then used as a port during the 18th and 19th century ships and from 1792 was a popular place for seal hunters.

In 1903, an attempt was made to build a road from Dusky Sound to Lake Manapouri. The road was never completed and now ends on the west side of Loch Maree.

The feral route of the former road is now a part of the Dusky Track, a trail that opens up the inner part of the Fiordland National Park between Lake Manapouri and Lake Hauroko. That being said, the sound can only be reached from the sea or from the air.

On 15 July 2009 the Dusky Sound was the center of a major earthquake (see Dusky Sound earthquake of 2009), which supports many landslides on the surrounding slopes of the mountains produced and about one meter high tsunami on the coast and in the sound result had.
