Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network ( DMVPN ) is used in hub-and- spoke networks to the hub router to relieve, if more spoke routers, want to build connections. DMVPN is Cisco proprietar and heard, despite "dynamic " in its name, to site-to -site VPN.

The configuration of the traditional VPN connections in hub -and-spoke environment can be quite large and complicated fail, depending on number of spoke routers. Each hub router needs its own ISAKMP peer statements, GRE tunnel, crypto ACLs, and crypto maps.

DMVPN solves many problems by using already existing technologies, such as IPsec, GRE tunnels and NHRP (Next Hop Resolution Protocol). In hub router only a mGRE interface and an IPsec profile for all connections will be used. Even when a new spoke router is added, no further settings need to be made to the Hub router.

Spoke routers learn from each other using a dynamic routing protocol. ( In most cases, OSPF or EIGRP, but other protocols are supported). These DMVPN supports multiple hub routers, so that the compounds can be redundant. Also load balancing is possible.
