E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park

The E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is a 2.3 square kilometer State Park in Louisville, Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is used primarily for recreation for the population.

History

The park area was used for agriculture in the 20th century by the Kentucky Central State Hospital. Of these, still bear witness barns and a cemetery. The park was established by Governor Louie B. Nunn 1971. In May 1975, the facilities of the park was officially opened. The park after Erbon Powers "Tom" Sawyer was named (* 1915, † 1969), a judge and local politicians who died in a tragic car accident on September 23, 1969 killed. His daughter Diane Sawyer is a well-known television presenter.

Plant

The park is located in the Freys Hills and has gradually developed from an agricultural area into a park. Over the years, hundreds of trees have been planted, which have transformed the existing fields in a park. There are in the park area great leisure facilities: The Activities Center contains a sports hall with 600 seats and basketball and badminton courts. Also, find an outdoor pool, ten football fields, three softball fields, a 1.6 -kilometer fitness trail, a two-kilometer walk along the Goose Creek and a BMX course. Furthermore, there is in the park a model airfield, a dog park, children's playgrounds and picnic areas.

Activities

The population in Eastern Jefferson County has grown substantially in recent years, and the state park is used by many residents for recreation. The Tom Sawyer State Park Foundation, a charitable institution for the support of state parks, was established in 1981. She is a volunteer organization that helps volunteer in the park and donations for the maintenance and expansion of the park collects. The administration of the state parks offers numerous programs for nature conservation and environmental education for schools as well as a summer camp for young people. The Louisville Astronomical Society uses the park for stargazing. Every August, the park is the venue of the National Bicycle League Grand Nationals, a BMX racing, which attracts hundreds of riders from all over the world.
