Geography

The County is located in north-central Kentucky, is bordered to the northwest by Indiana, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 1032 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Oldham County, Shelby County, Spencer County, Bullitt County, and Hardin County.

History

Jefferson County was formed on May 1, 1780 Original County from the Virginia Territory. It was named after President Thomas Jefferson.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jefferson County 693 604 people in 287 012 households and 183 113 families. The population density was 695 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 77.38 percent White, 18.88 percent Black or African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 1.39 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.68 percent from other races groups; 1.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 287 012 households out of which 29.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.2 percent were married couples living together, 14.7 percent were single mothers, 36.2 percent were non-families, 30.5 percent of all households and 10.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.

Based on the county the population was spread from 24.3 percent population under 18 years, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 87.6 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 39,457, and the median income for a family was $ 49,161. Males had a median income of $ 36,484, women $ 26,255. The per capita income was $ 22,352. 9.5 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 18.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.8 percent of those 65 years.
