Pike County (Kentucky)

Pike County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pikeville.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme east of Kentucky, bounded on the southeast by Virginia, to the northeast of West Virginia and has an area of 2043 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Martin County, Letcher County, Knott County and Floyd County.

History

Pike County was formed on December 19, 1821 from parts of Floyd County. It was named after Zebulon Pike, a general and explorer of the area.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Pike County 68 736 people in 27 612 households, and 20,377 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 23.7 percent population under 18 years, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 91.2 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 23,930, and the median income for a family was $ 29,302. Males had a median income of $ 32,332, women $ 19,229. The per capita income was $ 14,005. 20.6 percent of families and 23.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
