Monroe County (Kentucky)

Monroe County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Tompkinsville, which was named after the Vice - President Daniel D. Tompkins. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southern Kentucky, bordering the state of Tennessee and has an area of 860 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Barren County, Metcalfe County, Cumberland County and Allen County.

History

Monroe County was formed on January 19, 1820 from parts of Barren County and Cumberland County. It was named after President James Monroe.
