Bullitt County, Kentucky

Bullitt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Shepherdsville, which was named after Adam Shepherd, an early settler and mill owner.

Geography

The County is located north of the geographic center of Kentucky, is located in the west only two miles from the Ohio River and Indiana and has an area of 778 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jefferson County, Spencer County, Nelson County and Hardin County.

History

Bullitt County was formed on December 13, 1796 from parts of Jefferson County and Nelson County. It was named after Governor Alexander Scott Bullitt.

According to the census of 2000, there were 61 236 people in 22,171 households and 17,736 families. The population density was 79 people per km ². The racial the population was composed of 98.07 % White, 0.38 % African American, 0.34 % Native American, 0.27 % Asian, 0.01 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.16 % from other ethnic groups. 0.77 % were descended from two or more races. 0.63 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 22,171 households out of which 39.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 65.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers, 20.0 percent were non-families, 16.4 percent of all households and 5.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.07.

Based on the county the population was spread from 27.2 percent population under 18 years, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 32.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 7.8 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 97.2 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 45,106, and the median income for a family was $ 49,481. Males have a median income of $ 35,851, women $ 24,098. The per capita income was $ 18,339. 6.2 percent of families and 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 11.4 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 7.6 percent of those 65 years.
