Knott County, Kentucky

Knott County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hindman, named after Lt. Governor James R. Hindman. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme east of Kentucky, is located in the southeast about 25 miles from Virginia and has an area of 914 square kilometers, of which two square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Magoffin County, Floyd County, Pike County, Letcher County, Perry County, and Breathitt County.

History

The Knott County was formed on May 5, 1884 from portions of Breathitt County, Floyd County, Letcher County and Perry County. It was named after Governor J. Proctor Knott.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Knott County 17,649 people in 6,717 households and 4,990 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer.
