Fayette County (Kentucky)

Fayette County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lexington, which was named after the city in Massachusetts.

Geography

The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 739 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scott County, Bourbon County, Clark County, Madison County, Jessamine County and Woodford County.

History

Fayette County was formed on May 1, 1780 Original County. It was next to the Jefferson County and Lincoln County one of three counties that existed in the formation of the State of Kentucky. The County included the area north and east of the Kentucky River. From it emerged today 37 counties and seven others were parts of it. The final boundaries of the county were established in 1799. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a supporter of the American Revolutionary War.
