Fayette County (Kentucky)

Fayette County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lexington, which was named after the city in Massachusetts.

Geography

The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Kentucky and has an area of 739 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scott County, Bourbon County, Clark County, Madison County, Jessamine County and Woodford County.

History

Fayette County was formed on May 1, 1780 Original County. It was next to the Jefferson County and Lincoln County one of three counties that existed in the formation of the State of Kentucky. The County included the area north and east of the Kentucky River. From it emerged today 37 counties and seven others were parts of it. The final boundaries of the county were established in 1799. It was named after Marie -Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, a supporter of the American Revolutionary War.

On 1 January 1974 formed the Countyverwaltung and the city of Lexington, a Consolidated city- county, administered by the Lexington -Fayette Urban County Government.

According to the census of 2000, there were 260 512 people in Fayette County. Of these, 12,723 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants living in 108 288 households and 62 915 families. The population density was 354 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.04 percent White, 13.48 percent Black or African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 2.46 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.21 percent from other races groups; 1.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 108 288 households out of which 27.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers, 41.9 percent were non-families, 31.7 percent of all households and 7.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread from 21.3 percent population under 18 years, 14.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 33.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 94.3 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 39,813, and the median income for a family was $ 53,264. Males have a median income of $ 36,166, women $ 26,964. The per capita income was $ 23,109. 8.2 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 14.3 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 8.6 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
