McCreary County, Kentucky

McCreary County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Whitley City, which was named after Colonel William Whitley. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kentucky, is bordered to the south by the State of Tennessee and has an area of 1115 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pulaski County, Laurel County, Whitley County, Scott County and Wayne County.

History

McCreary County was formed on March 12, 1912 from parts of Pulaski County, Wayne County and Whitley County. It was named after Governor James B. McCreary.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,080 people in McCreary County. Of these, 429 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 6,520 households and 4,753 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.99 percent White, 0.63 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.02 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.20 percent from other races groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,520 households out of which 35.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.8 percent were single mothers, 27.1 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent of all households and 8.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.

Based on the county the population was spread out 27.7 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.8 per cent between 18 and 24 years, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 10.6 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 93.8 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 19,348, and the median income for a family was $ 22,261. Males have a median income of $ 20,823, women $ 15,575. The per capita income was $ 9,896. 26.1 percent of families and 32.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 40.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 27.3 percent of those 65 years.
