McCreary County, Kentucky

McCreary County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Whitley City, which was named after Colonel William Whitley. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kentucky, is bordered to the south by the State of Tennessee and has an area of 1115 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Pulaski County, Laurel County, Whitley County, Scott County and Wayne County.

History

McCreary County was formed on March 12, 1912 from parts of Pulaski County, Wayne County and Whitley County. It was named after Governor James B. McCreary.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,080 people in McCreary County. Of these, 429 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 6,520 households and 4,753 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer.
