Owsley County, Kentucky

Owsley County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Booneville, which was named after the border guards Daniel Boone. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Kentucky, is located in the southeast about 90 miles from Virginia and has an area of 513 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County, Breathitt County, Perry County, Clay County and Jackson County.

History

Owsley County was formed on January 23, 1843 from portions of Breathitt County, Clay County and Estill County. It was named after William Owsley, a judge and governor.
