Elliott County, Kentucky

Elliott County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sandy Hook, which was named after its location on a bend of the Little Sandy River. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, is in the north about 60 miles from Ohio, in the east just 35 km from West Virginia and has an area of 609 square kilometers, of which three square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Carter County, Lawrence County, Morgan County and Rowan County.

History

Elliott County was formed on January 26, 1869 from parts of Carter County, Lawrence County and Morgan County. It was named after John Milton Elliott, a member of the U.S. Congress.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Elliott County 6,748 people in 2,638 households and 1,925 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.0 percent white and 0.1 percent of Native Americans; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.6 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,638 households out of which 33.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 27.0 percent were non-families, 24.7 percent of all households and 11.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.02.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.4 percent population under 18 years, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 93.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 21,014, and the median income for a family was $ 27,125. Males have a median income of $ 29,593, women $ 20,339. The per capita income was $ 12,067. 20.8 percent of families and 25.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 30.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 26.4 percent of those 65 years.
