E. U. Essien-Udom

Essien Essien - Udom Udosen ( born October 25, 1928 in Ikot Osong, Nigeria ) is a Nigerian political scientist, sociologist, historian and Panafrikanist.

Essien - Udom received his education at the local primary school and the Holy Family College at Abak. He graduated from the Higher Education at Oberlin College in Ohio (1951-1955) and at the University of Chicago (1955-1961), where he graduated in Political Science and International Relations. He taught at various universities around the world and also took part in administrative posts, including Harvard University, Brown University, University of Birmingham and University of Ibadan.

His writings deal intensively with the movements of Pan-Africanism and Garveyism, founded by Marcus Garvey. His most famous work, the study Black Nationalism: A Search for Identity in America, is about the rise of the Muslim movement in the United States and the nature and extent of their attraction for the unterschichtigen African Americans. Essien - Udom collected this information for over two years in close collaboration with leaders and members of the movement.
