Earl of Airlie

Earl of Airlie is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the family Ogilvy.

Ancestral homes of the family are Airlie Castle and Castle Cortachy in Forfar, Angus, Scotland.

Award

The title was James Ogilvy, 7th Lord Ogilvy of Airlie awarded in 1639. This was one of the military leaders of the English king in the Episcopal wars.

Subordinate title

The Earl of Airlie leads the subordinate title Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, which was awarded in 1491 when James Ogilvy was raised to the Lord of Parliament. He also belongs to the Peerage of Scotland.

The respective heir takes the courtesy title Lord Ogilvy.

Withdrawal of the title

The third Earl took part in the uprising of 1715, after which he was stripped of his title. This continued when the son of the fourth Earl took part in the uprising of 1745. Only in 1826 was the retroactive repeal of the withdrawal by Act of Parliament.

Trivia

Sir Angus Ogilvy, the husband of Princess Alexandra, a granddaughter of King George V, was a son of the twelfth Earl.
