Earl of Albemarle

Earl of Albemarle (or Albermarle ) is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which is now run by the English family Keppel. Albemarle is an early variant of the French Aumale (Latin Alba Marla ). After the loss of the French Aumale county the title of the English Earl of Albemarle for the possessions of the counts remained in England.

Still in the award document of King William III. Arnold Joost van Keppel (1697 ) is referred to as the Albemarle city and country in the Duchy of Normandy - an area that has long ceased subordinate to the King of England.

Ceremonies

The title was awarded a total of four times, also once the dignity of the Duke of Albemarle was awarded.

The fief of Aumale was the Archbishop of Rouen at Odo III. given the exiled Count of Champagne and brother of William the Conqueror, who in turn brought it to a county. With Odo's death, his son Stephan followed not only as Count of Aumale, but also as Lord of Holderness, Bytham ( Lincolnshire ) etc., goods which later became known as a "fairy and Honor of Albemarle ."

Stephan died about 1127 and left a son, William the thickness ( William le Gros ). This was the title again in 1138, now given by the English king. With Aveline de Forz, 6th Countess of Albemarle, ( and wife of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster) died the family in 1274 and went out of the title.

The title was 1412 again, 1st Duke of Clarence awarded to Thomas of Lancaster, but died out nine years later with his death. In 1660 the dignity of Duke of Albemarle was awarded to George Monck, but went out again already in 1688 with the death of his son.

Finally, the title in 1697 went to the Dutch favorite of William III. Arnold Joost van Keppel, whose descendants still guide him today.

Subordinate title

The Earl of Albemarle carries the additional title: Viscount Bury, in the county of Lancashire ( created 1697 ) and Baron Ashford, of Ashford in Kent ( created 1697 ), both, as well as the earldom in the Peerage of England.

The courtesy title for the eldest son of the Earl Viscount Bury.
