Earl of Clancarty

Earl of Clancarty, in the Irish counties of Cork and of Galway, is a British hereditary title of nobility, which is now worn by the family of Le Poer Trench. The title has been created twice in the Peerage of Ireland.

The family seat was until 1922 Garbally Court, Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland.

Ceremonies

The title was in 1658 for Donough MacCarty, 2nd Viscount Muskerry, created for the first time. This was a supporter of the king during the English Civil War. The title was the fourth Earl withdrawn in 1691 after it supported the Jacobites.

The second award was presented in 1803 to William Trench, 1st Viscount Dunlo. This was a long-standing member of the Irish House of Commons. He was a direct descendant from a sister of the first Earl of the first ceremony.

Subordinate title

The first Earl of second award was in 1797 for Baron Kilconnel, of Garbally in the County of Galway, and in 1801 Viscount Dunlo, of Dunlo and Ballinasloe in the counties of Galway and Roscommon, charged. Both titles are in the Peerage of Ireland.

His son, the second Earl, was an important politician and diplomat of his time. He also served as British Ambassador to the Netherlands. In 1815 he was created Baron Trench, of Garbally in the County of Galway, then in 1823, elevated to Viscount Clancarty, of the County of Cork. Through these titles belonging to the peerage of the United Kingdom, the respective Earl has had to the House of Lords Act 1999 an automatic seat in the House of Lords.

All titles are listed as subordinate title of the earldom. The respective heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Dunlo.
