Earl of Clarendon

Earl of Clarendon is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Great Britain, which is supported by a branch of the Villiers family. He had previously been awarded already once in the Peerage of England.

Ancestral home of the family is Holywell House in Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire.

Ceremonies

The first award was presented in 1661 to the British statesman and historian Edward Hyde. With the death of the fourth Earl of this title became extinct in 1753 but again, since he had no male heir.

The second ceremony in the Peerage of Great Britain was held in 1776. Thomas Villiers, the husband of the grand daughter of the fourth Earl, was elevated to Earl.

Subordinate title

The only subordinate title of today's earldom is Baron Hyde, of Hindon in the County of Wiltshire ( created in 1756 ). This title, which belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain, is worn as a courtesy title by the eldest son of the Earl.

Thomas Villiers was the second son of William Villiers, 2nd Earl of Jersey. The Earl of Clarendon, therefore, are also available in the succession to the title of Earl of Jersey.
