Earl of Gowrie

Earl of Gowrie is a British hereditary title of nobility that has ever been awarded once in the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom. He is supported by the head of the Ruthven family. The title is named after a region in Scotland, whose center is the city of Perth.

The respective Earl is Chief of the Clan Ruthven.

Award

The title was first created in 1581 for William Ruthven, 4th Lord Ruthven, in the Peerage of Scotland. This was an important courtier of his time and involved in many intrigues at the Scottish court. Before he was executed in 1584 for treason, he was stripped of the title. Two years later, his son was used in the title. The dignity became extinct in 1600 with the death of the third Earl.

The second award was Alexander Hore - Ruthven 1945, 1st Baron Gowrie, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This had been governor of Australian states and finally the Governor General of Australia, having previously served in the British Army as an officer.

Subordinate title

The respective Earl was first awarded in 1488 led the created, also the Peerage of Scotland accompanying title of Lord Ruthven, who had been awarded the great-grandfather of the first Earl. He also became extinct in 1600.

The first Earl of the second ceremony had been raised in 1935 for Baron Gowrie of Canberra in the Commonwealth of Australia and of Dirleton in the County of East Lothian. Simultaneously with the earldom him the title of Viscount Ruthven of Canberra, of Dirleton was in the County of East Lothian, granted.

His grandson, the second Earl, eventually inherited in 1956 by his great-uncle in 1919 created the title of Baron Ruthven of Gowrie, Gowrie in the County of of Perth. All these titles are also included in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Ruthven of Canberra.
