Earl of Minto

Earl of Minto, in the County of Roxburgh, is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is supported by the family Elliot - Murray - Kynynmound.

Ancestral home of the family is Minto House in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland.

Award

The title was for Gilbert Elliot - Murray - Kynynmound, 1st Baron Minto, created in 1813. This was a well-known politician, diplomat and colonial administrator. From 1807 to 1813 he was Governor General and Viceroy of India.

Subordinate title

The first Earl was in 1797 in the County of Roxburgh, elevated to Baron Minto, of Minto. This title belongs to the peerage of Great Britain.

Simultaneously with the earldom the dignity of Viscount Melgund, of Melgund was in the County of Forfar, awarded. This title, which belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom is run as a courtesy title from the heirs of each title.

Both titles are listed as subordinate Would the respective Earl.

Another title

The great-grandfather of the first Earl was a famous Scottish judges of his time. He became a baronet in 1700, of Minto in the County of Roxburgh collected. This title belongs to the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and is still run by the respective Earl addition to his other titles.
