Earl of Romney

The title Earl of Romney was created twice. The first creation in the Peerage of Great Britain took place on May 14, 1694 the son of Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester, Henry Sidney, who as a member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Tamworth, Privy Councillor, Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland was. However, the title became extinct with his death on 8 April 1704.

The second creation of the title was in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on 22 June 1801 Viscount Marsham, of The Mote in the County of Kent, and Earl of Romney to Charles Marsham, 3rd Baron of Romney, the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Maidstone and Kent as well as now also Lord Lieutenant of Kent was. He was a descendant of Robert Marsham, who had represented the constituency of Maidstone several years in the House, and at times was Lieutenant Governor of Dover Castle, and on June 22, 1716 1st Baron of Romney, of Romney in the County of Kent was. The father of the 3rd Baron Romney and 1st Earl of Romney was Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney, who was both President of the Marine Society and President of the Royal Society of Arts for several years.

Both Charles Marsham, 2nd Earl of Romney and Charles Marsham, 3rd Earl of Romney were also members of the House of Commons. During the later 2nd Earl successively the constituency Hythe, Hythe Downton and again represented, represented the 3rd Earl some years the constituency of West Kent in the House of Commons.
