Earl of Scarbrough

Earl of Scarbrough is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the town of Scarborough in England, which is supported by the family Lumley.

Ancestral home of the family is Sandbeck House in Rotherham. In addition, Lumley Castle is owned by the family.

Award

The title was in 1690 for Richard Lumley, 2nd Viscount Lumley, created. He was one of the seven peers who had in 1688 William of Orange invited to cross over with an army to England.

Subordinate title

The grandfather of the first Earl had been in 1628 for Viscount Lumley, of Waterford, charged. This title belongs to the peerage of Ireland.

The first Earl had been in 1681 for Baron Lumley of Lumley Castle in the County of Durham, appointed and had thus received an automatic seat in the House of Lords. 1689 he was in the County of Durham, elevated to Viscount Lumley, of Lumley Castle. Both titles are part of the Peerage of England.

All titles are now run as subordinate Would the respective Earl. The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Lumley.
