The EASSy (Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System; German: East African Submarine Cable System) is a submarine cable system linking the countries of East Africa to the Internet. The project is considered a milestone in the development of a stable Internet infrastructure in East Africa. It commenced commercial operation on 30 July 2010. The cost should be about $ 248 million to complete. 92% of the shares belong to African societies, 8% International.

Infrastructure

The cable connects the countries of Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and South Africa directly with each other and to the Internet. To this end, EASSy has been connected to the existing submarine cables safe, SAT-3/WASC and SEA-ME -WE 3. The total length of 10,500 km. With a capacity of 4.72 Tb / s EASSy is the most powerful submarine in East Africa.

History

  • The project was initiated in January 2003 by the World Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) was signed in December 2003
  • A detailed feasibility study was presented in March 2004
  • A meeting of investors to collect data took place in June 2005
  • The final draft was presented in March 2006
  • The supply contract was signed in September 2006
  • Registration of an SPE was sealed in January 2007
  • A construction - and maintenance agreement was signed on 12 February 2007
  • The financing agreement was initiated in March 2007
  • The laying of the cable began on 14 March 2008
  • Start of commercial operation on 30 July 2010
