Eastern Counties Railway

The Eastern Counties Railway ( ECR) was a British railway company that existed from 1839 to 1862 and the east of London areas opened up. The operation began on June 20, 1839 between Mile End and Romford. In the following years, the route was on the one hand to the new London terminus Shoreditch (later Bishopsgate ) extended, on the other hand extended to Colchester.

The tracks were first laid to a gauge of five feet (1524 mm). In September and October 1844, the 82 km long stretch on the standard gauge of 4 feet and 8 ½ inches ( 1435 mm) was converted; the trading partner Northern and Eastern Railway followed this example. In 1846 the track in Colchester was connected with that of the Eastern Union Railway. 1862 joined the two companies and several smaller tracks together in East Anglia for the Great Eastern Railway.
