Eastman is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Dodge County and is its administrative headquarters.

Geography

Eastman is centrally located in Dodge County. The nearby towns are Chauncey, Cadwell and Chester. The nearest major town, Macon, located about 88 kilometers north-west, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 220 miles northwest. The city covers an area of 13.2 km ².

Population

The population is 5,634, of which 48.2 % men and 51.8 % women (as of July 2007). Since the year 2000, the population has increased by 2.2%. The average age of the people of Eastman is 34.5 years. 37.4 % of residents are African American, 59.8 % White and 1.8 % Hispanics. In 2006, the average annual income per household was $ 25,300, far below the average of Georgia ( $ 46,832 ). Approximately 23.5 % of the population live below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is much higher than the average of Georgia.

Education

Eastman has four public schools, the Dodge County High School, South Dodge Elementary School, North Dodge Elementary School and the Dodge County Middle School. In addition to a public library located in the city.

History

The town was first settled in 1840 and is named after William Pitt Eastman, who has donated her a large part of his land ownership. In the past it was referred to as " Paris of the Wiregrass " and enjoyed the reputation of one high cultural level. Based in the city Stuckey Candy Plant enjoys local celebrity and Eastman has helped to her nickname as the " Candy Capital of Georgia ."
