Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes

Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi -Hughes ( born September 4, 1939 in Cape Coast, Ghana ) is one of the most famous politicians and lawyers of the West African country of Ghana. Currently he has in the Ghanaian Parliament the highest office of the legislative power in Ghana, the Office of Speaker of Parliament (Speaker of Parliament ), occupied.

Training

Sekyi -Hughes was born in Cape Coast, capital of the Central Region of Ghana. Here he attended the 1945-1953 Cape Coast Government Boys School and the 1954-1960 Adisadel College, where he graduated in (West African School Certifikate ).

Sekyi -Hughes moved to the University of Ghana in Legon, a suburb of Accra, and here began his studies in 1961. In 1964 he graduated from the university with a Bachelor ( Hons. ) and moved to the Ghana School of Law, where he finished in 1966 with the LL.B., a law degree, his training. From the Netherlands Sekyi -Hughes received by the Academy of International Court of Justice in The Hague, an award which entitled him to study law.

Career

Sekyi -Hughes was incorporated in the year 1966 in the Chamber of Lawyers in Ghana as Barrister and Solicitor and worked since that time as a lawyer and attorney. He became a partner in the law firm Gaisie, Zwenes, Hughes and Co. with the law firm based in Accra and Takoradi. To his profession Sekyi -Hughes took over in 1974, the activity as a notary. Also in the Ghanaian Bar Association, he held key positions. He was Chairman of the Bar Association of the Western region between the 1977 and 1981.

At the same time, he was already politically active. Sekyi -Hughes became a member of the Legal Council and the Council of the Bar Association. In 1981 he was a member of the Ghanaian delegation to the Commonwealth Law Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, and in 1991 a member of the Ghanaian delegation to the Conference of African Law Societies ( African Bar Conference) in Nigeria.

As a politician and legal expert Sekyi -Hughes was determined in 2001 by the traditional rulers and the people as a representative of the Western Region as a member of the Council of State ( State Council ), an advisory body constitution of Ghana. Throughout his legal and political career Sekyi -Hughes was a champion of human rights and stood up for the environment.

On 7 January 2005, Ebenezer Sekyi -Hughes third speaker of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, and followed Peter Ala Adjetey in office after. Since 1951 Sekyi -Hughes has thus held as a ninth person the office of Speaker of Parliament.

Family

Sekyi - Huges is married and has six children.
