Eberhard Eimler

Eberhard Eimler ( born November 30, 1930 in Ulm ) is a German retired General the Air Force and was last 1987-1990 Deputy Supreme Commander of NATO forces in Europe.

Life

Family and Education

Eberhard Eimler, was born in 1930 as son of the captain of the pioneers Robert Eimler, later Major General. Yet in 1944 he was drafted into East Prussia, where he grew into the Volkssturm. 1947 closed Eimler his schooling from the High School. He then completed in his native city of Ulm training as an electrician. He then began studying electrical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart, where he graduated as an electrical engineer. During his studies he worked as a manager of the Ulm branch of the American Express Company.

1951 married Eimler originally from the Netherlands merchant's daughter Hildegard Ruegner.

Military career

Training, first uses and service as a staff officer

In May 1956 Eimler entered the service of the Air Force and completed pilot training. In April 1957 he was even a flight instructor at the pilot school "B" in Fürstenfeldbruck as a lieutenant. He remained there until 1961 and later graduated as a captain of the 8th Air Force General Staff Course at the Staff College in Hamburg. Following this, he received a promotion to Major and served as a staff officer for deployment and operation issues at the National War College.

From the summer of 1966 served Eimler during the " Starfighter crisis " speaker in Bonn Federal Ministry of Defence. A little later he became adjutant of the then Chief of Air Force Lieutenant General John Steinhoff. During this time he experienced with dealing with the " Starfighter crisis" and the initial planning for the combat aircraft Tornado and Alpha Jet.

As a lieutenant colonel, he was on October 1, 1970 commander of the flying group of the Light Combat Squadron 43 in Oldenburg. Half a year later, on 1 April 1971 he was Commodore of the Light Combat Squadron 42 horse field. There was also his promotion to colonel.

After these uses Eimler was department head for " leadership and commitment in" Air Force Command in Cologne's air force barracks delusion in August 1973. During this time, the revision of the airspace and air corridor concept of the Federal Republic of Germany fell within his remit. A short time later, he was Head of Unit for " air traffic control and flight operations " in the command staff of the Air Force ( FUEL).

Service in the rank of general

On April 1, 1976 Eimler was appointed brigadier general. He was the first General of the German Air Force, who had not served in the Air Force of the Armed Forces. Until 1978, he was Deputy Chief of Staff for " mission control " in the command staff of the Air Force. A year later with the acquisition of official business as commander of the 2nd Air Division in Birkenfeld on 1 July 1977 he was appointed major general. In the following year Eimler was appointed on 1 October 1980 to Lieutenant General and served as the Deputy Commander of the Allied Air Forces Central Europe ( AAFCE ) under the U.S. General Charles A. Gabriel. During this time he also learned the important for its final use assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the Allied allies know.

On April 1, 1983 Lieutenant General Eimler was the successor of Friedrich Obleser Chief of Air Force. During his tenure, among others, the fundamental decision to procure the Euro Fighters, then 90 hunters, as well as the re-erection of the NCO School of the Air Force fell.

Lieutenant General Eimler was promoted on 1 October 1987 General and was only the 24th soldier who was awarded the highest rank in the Bundeswehr. As the successor of Hans -Joachim Mack, he was Deputy Supreme Commander of the NATO forces in Europe, U.S. General John Galvin. During the following time Eimler was responsible for air and naval warfare, infrastructure, communications and "Command and Control".

On September 30, 1990 Eberhard Eimler was adopted after reaching the age to retire.

After his retirement

Eberhard Eimler is known as " single personality " member of the Presidium of the German Association for Defence Technology In addition, he is an honorary member of the Club der Luftfahrt eV and a co-opted member of the board of the Friends of Air Force eV, and he is involved as a sponsor for the concerts for the youth funds.
