Eberhard Nestle

Eberhard Nestle ( born May 1, 1851 in Stuttgart, † March 9, 1913 ) was a Protestant theologian and Orientalist; he was the father of Erwin Nestle.

Life

Nestle was a son of Obertribunalprokurators Christian Gottlieb Nestle and his wife Sophie Beate Kleinmann. His half-brother of the second marriage of the father was the philologist Wilhelm Nestle.

He studied in Tübingen from 1869 to 1874, was phil with a dissertation on the Hebrew and Greek text forms of the Book of Ezekiel to Dr.. doctorate, then started working in the field of Oriental studies, and wrote, among other things a Syrian grammar. In later years he concentrated on the extraction of a textual criticism secured Bible text.

After training and working as a Repetent the Protestant Foundation Tübingen, he was a secondary school teacher in Ulm, interrupted by the representation of a professorship in Tübingen since 1898 and professor from 1912 headmaster at the Evangelical Theological Seminary Maulbronn.

1880 married Nestle in Tübingen Klara Kommerell ( 1852-1887 ) and had a son with her, Erwin Nestle. 1887, died after a brief illness, his wife, and three years later married his second wife Elisabeth Nestle 1890 Aichele ( 1867-1944 ); with her he had five daughters and one son.

In 1898, the developed and published by him from older editions and manuscripts version of the Greek New Testament was published at the Württemberg Bible Institute Stuttgart under the title Novum Testamentum cum Grace Apparatu critico ex libris manu editionibus et scriptis collecto.

It took only a few years until " Nestle " prevailed as a reference text-critical edition of the Greek New Testament world. After the death of Eberhard Nestle's his son Erwin Nestle took over the publication and contributed significantly to a continuous improvement of the editions. Since 1952, the publication was made with the collaboration of Kurt Aland. The well-known now as " Nestle -Aland " theological standard work appeared in 1993 already in the 27th edition.

Shortly before his death he was working on a critical edition of Luther's Latin Vulgate revision of the Weimar edition. The publication took over after his death, also his son.
