Ed Schuller

Life and work

He is the eldest son of the composer Gunther Schuller and studied music theory, clarinet and bass with David Levenson from the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra ( 1970-72 ) and bass with Larry Wolf of the Boston Symphony Orchestra ( 1972-74 ). After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music, he toured Europe with the bands of Paul Motian, Tim Berne, Eric Watson, Marty Cook, Jim Pepper, Mal Waldron, Perry Robinson, Nicolas Simion, Frank Lacy and Uli Lenz. In the U.S., he played with Pat Martino, Jaki Byard, Lee Konitz, Clark Terry, Julius Hemphill, Karl Berger, Mat Maneri, Ray Anderson and others. As a bandleader he took in 1991 on several CDs. Occasionally he works with his brother, drummer George Schuller, together (say with Burton Greene or in the band The Schull Dogs with Herb Robertson and Gebhard Ullmann ). With Arto Tuncboyaciyan and poor Donelian he belonged from 1989 to ethno - jazz band Night Ark.

Schuller takes place in a dancing way. Since 1975, he has recorded more than 60 records and CDs, and participated in numerous acclaimed ensembles and projects, such as in the world premiere of Charles Mingus ' Epitaph, Joe Lovano in rush hour or in Sonic Temples of Ran Blake Trio ( 2001).

In addition to his work as a bassist Schuller has composed over 50 works for various ensembles and musical contexts. He taught at Berklee College of Music and directed the Department of Jazz at the Schweitzer Institute in Sandpoint, Idaho; for four years he worked as a lecturer for bass at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin. He was awarded the "Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education" for outstanding achievements as a jazz educator in 1996.
