George Schuller

Life and work

Schuller is the son of composer, musicologist and horn player Gunther Schuller and grew up in Boston, where he studied at the New England Conservatory of Music, Jazz and in 1982 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. In 1984 he co-founded the (12 - piece ) Big Band Orange then Blue (named after a piece by Charles Mingus, who is by his own admission of Schuller as well as Gil Evans one of his musical heroes ), with which he released several albums - about 1987 Music for Jazz Orchestra at GM Recordings and 1989 Jumpin ' in the Future 1989 ( with Third stream compositions and under the direction of Gunther Schuller ).

He made more recordings as a band leader with the quartet Schull Dogs, in which his brother Ed Schuller plays along as a bass player and the saxophonist George Garzone Malaby and George. Their debut album was released in 1998 Tenor Tantrums with trumpeter Dave Ballou ). He also worked with the quintet Circle Wide ( 'Round about now, Playscape, 2003), the octet Jigsaw ( also his brother ). In addition, he recorded with Joe Lovano ( Rush Hour, Blue Note, 1995 ) and with the pianist Ran Blake and Eugene Maslov. Since 1994 he lives in Brooklyn. He also works as a producer and composer / arranger. Currently ( 2012) he works with his band, George Schuller 's Circle Wide and dedicated to the music of Keith Jarrett's American Quartet of the 1970s. The album lists Both Ways ( Playscape ), he recorded with Peter Apfelbaum, Brad Shepik, Tom Beckham and Dave Ambrosio.
