Edmond Séchan

Edmond Louis Romain Séchan ( born September 20, 1919 in Montpellier, † June 7, 2002 in Courbevoie ) was a multi-award winning French cinematographer and director.

Life and work

Edmond Séchan came from a Protestant family of the educated middle class. His father was the Hellenist Louis Séchan, who taught at the Sorbonne, his brother the writer Olivier Séchan. His nephew, Renaud Séchan, son of his brother, has been one of the most popular singer in France.

Séchan received his photographic training at the École technique de photographie et de cinématographie and also attended the Film School of Vaugirard. After the war ( 1946 ) he took as a simple cameraman at various film documentaries by director Jacques Dupont as part of a large-scale, in several stages over five years protracted expedition to the Congo and Niger ( 'Mission Hogar -Congo - Niger ') in part.

His acclaimed photographic performance at The Stallion Crin Blanc, the semi-documentary story about the friendship between a horse from the Rhône Valley and a fisher boy, Séchan made ​​famous overnight in the industry. He then received orders from the movie, but proved his picture creative skills especially over and over again in documentaries that he produced for the part itself. Two of these works were awarded in Hollywood with the Oscar, the Academy Award for the film directed by Séchan adventure of a goldfish went to the producers and nature filmmaker Jacques- Yves Cousteau, repeatedly worked with the Séchan in the 50s.
