Edolphus Towns

Edolphus "Ed" Towns ( born July 21, 1934 in Chadbourn, Columbus County, North Carolina ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and was from 1983 to 2013 member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of New York.

Biography

After visiting the Chadbourn Westside High School, he studied from 1952 at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she earned in 1956 a Bachelor of Science ( B.Sc.). After he made from 1956 to 1958 his military service and then worked as a lecturer at Fordham University in New York City. Later, he completed a postgraduate degree in social work from Adelphi University in New York City and graduated in 1973 with a Master of Social Work (MSW ) from.

His political career began in 1976 as Vice President of Towns of New York's Brooklyn County ( Borough of Brooklyn ). He held this position until 1982.

In 1982, he was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and represented there by 13 subsequent re- elections of January 3, 1983 to the 11th and from January 3, 1993 at the tenth Congressional District of New York. From 2009 to 2011, Towns was also Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform ( U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform ), but was urged by his party colleagues from office; and was succeeded by Darrell Issa. At times, he was one of the supporters of the idea of an independent state of the Sikhs in India and Pakistan with the name of Khalistan.

In April 2012, Towns announced that it would not re- apply for re-election. He thus retired on January 3, 2013 from the Congress.
