Édouard-Gérard Balbiani

Edouard -Gérard Balbiani ( born July 31, 1823 in Port-au -Prince, Haiti, † July 25, 1899 ) was a French zoologist, embryologist and microbiologist.

Balbiani studied in Paris Natural Sciences at the zoologist Henri Marie de Blainville Ducrotay.

He was from 1874 until his death in 1899 professor of embryology at the Collège de France.

Together with the anatomist Louis -Antoine Ranvier (1835-1922), he founded the journal Archives d' anatomie microscopique. Balbiani discovered named after him Balbiani ring, see Polytänchromosom, and described a number of new taxa of protozoa.

1884 married his daughter Laure Balbiani the psychologist Alfred Binet.
