Édouard Goursat

Édouard Jean- Baptiste Goursat ( born May 21, 1858 in Lanzac, department Lot, France, † November 25, 1936 in Paris, France) was a French mathematician who is known as the author of a classical analysis textbook.

Goursat attended the Collège de Brive- la -Gaillarde and began in 1876 to study at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS ). He was particularly influenced by Charles Hermite and Charles Émile Jean Darboux and learned Picard know, who studied with him and with whom he remained a lifelong friend. Picard persuaded him later to begin a college career. In 1879 he began teaching at the University of Paris and received his doctorate in 1881 for his work " Sur l' équation différentialle linéaire qui ADMET pour la série intégrale hypergéometrique ". Then Goursat taught until 1885 in Toulouse and then went back to his original university, the ENS. Since the time in Toulouse, he produced numerous publications on various areas of analysis. From lecturing at the ENS was his famous Cours d'analyze mathématique, which appeared in 1902 and 1913 in three volumes and for which he is best known. Goursat in 1919 was admitted to the Académie des sciences, after he had been elected in 1918 foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.

According to him, the lemma was named by Goursat.
