Eduard Fischer (mycologist)

Eduard Fischer ( born June 16, 1861 in Bern, † November 18, 1939 ) was a Swiss botanist who became important mainly as a mycologist. His botanical and mycological author abbreviation is " E.Fisch. ».

Life

Eduard Fischer was born on 16 June 1861, son of the botanist Ludwig Fischer in Bern. Fischer studied at the University of Bern and received his doctorate in 1883 at the mycologist Anton de Bary in Strasbourg. Further studies in Berlin followed, until he was appointed in 1885 as a lecturer at the University of Bern. In 1893 he was appointed there as Associate Professor. From 1897 to 1933 he was professor of botany and director of the botanical garden. During his tenure there came in 1906 to rebuild the large lecture hall, establishing the Orangerie and the Palm House and 1929 for the opening of the Alpine Garden Schynige plate. 1910/1911 he was rector of the University of Bern.

Eduard Fischer married in 1899 Johanna Gruner, who came from a family of scholars Berner. He died on November 18, 1939 aged 78 in Bern. He was the father of the musicologist and pianist Kurt von Fischer.

Work

Eduard Fischer worked intensively with the evolution of fungi. To this end, he wrote large monographs, many of them on the rust fungi. He also wrote numerous historical biology and philosophy of science works. Twelve species of fungi have been named by its discoverers after him. From 1917 to 1922 he headed the Swiss Society for Natural Sciences as central president.
