Eduard Joseph d'Alton

Joseph Wilhelm Eduard d' Alton ( born August 11, 1772 in Aquileia, † May 11, 1840 in Bonn ) was an anatomist, archaeologist, engraver and art critic.

Life

Eduard d' Alton was born in Aquileia in Trieste and grew up in Vienna. He traveled to Italy, lived in Altona ( 1802/ 03) and at the invitation of Karl August of Saxe- Weimar in Tiefurt (1809 /10), where he met Goethe and Lorenz Oken. In July 1816 Alton came at the invitation of Christian Heinrich Pander to Würzburg. The essential content of the book contributions to the development history of the chicken in the Eye had Alton and Ignaz Dollinger.

Alton was appointed without Habilitation at the University of Bonn founded in 1818 in Bonn. In the fall of 1818, he took up his position as an associate professor. One of his first lectures was in the winter semester 1819/20 over the age of classical art and Pericles, in relation to the acquisitions of the Athenian Lord Elgin. Among his most famous students included Prince Albert of Saxe -Coburg and his brother Ernst ( 1837 ) and Karl Marx in the course of art history from the Middle Ages up to the latest time (winter semester 1835/36 ). On January 21, 1827 he was appointed " Associate Professor of Art History". D' Alton died after two years of sore throat on May 11, 1840 in Bonn. From 1818 onwards he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, in 1831 a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, Department for the Fine Arts.

Family

About the parents of Joseph Eduard d' Alton, there are no exact figures. He is said to have had Irish ancestors. His father was said to be a high Austrian officer and both parents should have died about 1774. The names and dates of both parents are unknown.

D' Alton was with Sophie Friederike Book ( * 1776, † 1852), married. She was the wife of Johann Jacob Casimir Book ( * September 17, 1778, † March 13, 1851 in Frankfurt am Main). When this marriage ended in divorce and when Sophie Friederike D' Alton married, is still unknown. On July 17, 1803 Johann Samuel Eduard book was born in St. Goar. As a father, Johann Jacob Casimir book was specified, specified as one of the witnesses d' Alton.
