Edward Baines (1774–1848)

Edward Baines the Elder ( * 1774 in Ripon in Yorkshire; † August 3, 1848 ) was an English journalist and Member of Parliament.

Life

Baines career led from simple agents of printing up to the owner and editor of the Leeds Mercury. As one of the main proponents of liberalism in northern England, Baines also made politically a name. Between 1833 and 1841 he acted as an important leader of the Protestant Dissenters the District of Leeds in the House.

The later journalist Edward Baines, the younger was his son.
