Edward Gramlich

Edward Gramlich ( born July 18, 1939 in Rochester (New York), † September 5, 2007 in Washington DC) was an American professor of economics at the University of Michigan and member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the central bank the United States.

Life

Gramlich graduated from Williams College in 1961 and received his Masters in 1962. 1965 he completed his Ph.D. in Economics at Yale University. He went to the Central Bank as a researcher for economy of 1965 to 1970. Between 1973 and 1975 he worked at the Brookings Institution. Subsequently, he taught economics and public policy at the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1996 and returned to Michigan in 2005 as professor.

He was appointed to the Federal Reserve System by President Bill Clinton in 1997 and came back in 2005 from the post. For most of this time he was Chairman of the Board Committee on Consumer and Community Affairs. He was also Chairman of the Air Transportation Stabilization Board, which convened the Congress after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and examined the survival of the U.S. airline industry.

Gramlich died at the age of 68 from leukemia.
