Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby

Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby KG, PC ( May 10, 1509 *, † October 24, 1572 in Lathom, Lancashire, England) was an English nobleman.

Life

Edward Stanley inherited the earldom at the age of 13 years by his father, Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby. Henry VIII took it over, the Earl raise until he was of age. He commissioned the Catholic Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, to take care of the royal ward. Edward Stanley accompanied Cardinal Wolsey, among others, on a trip to France and was one of the nobles who were present at the declaration of Pope Clement VII to the divorce between Henry from his wife Catherine of Aragon.

1530 married Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk, his eldest daughter Catherine with Edward. This was done without the necessary consent given by Henry VIII and was one of the acts with which Thomas Howard wanted to extend the influence of Howard's. Despite the sharp rebuke of Henry VIII against Thomas Howard marriage was allowed to continue. However, Catherine was a few weeks after the wedding of the plague victim. Second wife was Catherine Howard's half-sister Dorothy Howard.

Edward Stanley plays politically, especially a role in the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace, an unrest, which was triggered by the release of churches and monasteries. He also was one of the judging subject in the trial of Lady Jane Grey.

Progeny

The first marriage was childless. From the second marriage six children were born:

  • Anne Stanley
  • Mary Stanley († September 3, 1609 )
  • Elizabeth Stanley
