Earl of Derby

Earl of Derby is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the city of Derby in England, which is now supported by the Stanley family.

Ancestral homes of the family are at Knowsley Hall Knowsley, Merseyside, and Greenhalgh Castle.

Ceremonies

The title was awarded a total of three times. The first award was presented in 1138 by King Stephen to Robert de Ferrers for his services in the battle of Northallerton. After the sixth Earl against King Henry III. Had rebelled in 1266, he was captured; Title and lands were confiscated.

Subordinate title

As a subordinate title of Earl of Derby, the title of Baron Stanley, of Bickerstaffe leads today in the County Palatine of Lancashire, ( created 1832) and Baron Stanley of Preston in the County Palatine of Lancashire ( created 1886). Both titles are in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The former title was created for Edward Smith - Stanley, the eldest son of the 12th Earl, of this two years later succeeded as Earl. His son was given the title in 1844 by a special Royal Decree ( writ of acceleration ), so that he was still his father's lifetime to peer and thus a member of the House of Lords.

The title of Baron Stanley of Preston was the second son of the 14th Earl, who had held several ministerial posts and then Governor General of Canada was. He followed his brother, then after the 16th Earl.

The first five Earls also bore the title of Baron Stanley of an award from the 1456 to the father of the first Earl. This barony currently suspended.

Trivia

  • The 12th Earl was named for the famous Epsom Derby. Even at the creation of the Epsom Oaks he was instrumental.
