Edward Szymkowiak

Edward Szymkowiak ( born March 13, 1932 in Szopienice, Poland, † January 28, 1990 in Bytom, Poland) was a Polish football goalkeeper.

He made his debut at home to small clubs like TuS Bogucice ( 1944) and KS 22 Mała Dąbrówka ( 1945-1949 ). From 1950-1952 he played for Ruch Chorzów, where he was Polish champion twice. There it took him only two years before he played in 1952 in Bielsko Garnizonowy WCS and Legia Warszawa at 1953-1956. He was just like Ruch Chorzow twice Polish champion. Between 1957 and 1969 he played for Polonia Bytom, where he was among other things, once Polish champion and ended his career.

He also won the Polonia International Football Cup 1963/64, which corresponds to today's Intertoto Cup. He got from the Polish sports newspaper sports four times the award of the golden shoe.

In honor of wearing the stadium of Polonia Bytom his name ( Edward Szymkowiak stadium).

For the Polish national football team, he completed 53 games and made his debut on May 25, 1952 against Romania. His last international game he played on September 26, 1965 against Finland. As a national team he also participated in the Olympic Games in Helsinki and Rome.
