Edwin Jongejans (1984 )

Edwin Jongejans ( born December 18, 1966 in Amstelveen ) is a former Dutch diver. He started in the art of jumping from 1 -meter and 3 -meter board. Jongejans was from the 1 -meter board world and European champion, he participated in two Olympic Games.

His first participation in a major championship experienced Jongejans at the World Cup 1986 in Madrid, where he finished tenth from the 3 -meter board. In 1988 he took part in Seoul for the first time in the Olympic Games. In the art of jumping from the 3 -meter board, he reached the final and finished eighth. The following year Jongejans won his first international medal at the European Championships in 1989 in Bonn, he became European Champion from the 1- m board. His athletic successful year he experienced in 1991. At the European Championships in Athens, he won the bronze medal from the 1 -meter board and at the World Championships in Perth, he surprised the entire competition and was the 1 -meter board champion, he also reached the 3- m board eighth. Jongejans is thus both at European Championships and World Championships each of the first champions in the art of jumping from 1 -meter board, since it was only in 1989 and 1991 included in the program. Jongejans also launched at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, ​​he reached the 3 -meter board again the finals and finished seventh. At the European Championships in Vienna in 1995 he was again European Champion from the 1 -meter board and finished shortly after his active career.

Jongejans is still the most successful Dutch diver at the European Championships and the only one who could win a medal at a World Cup. For his World Cup triumph, he was elected in his home Athlete of the Year in 1991.

He studied until 1984 at the University of Miami and trained there with the sports team of the University, the Hurricanes. Today he works as a trainer in British power center for water jumping in Leeds.

His sister Daphne Jongejans was also a successful water jumper. It was in 1987 the first Dutch European champion.
