Egbert Kankeleit

Egbert Kankeleit ( born April 16, 1929 in Hamburg ) is a German physicist.

Kankeleit studied in Munich nuclear physics and a doctorate in 1961 in the group of Heinz Maier- Leibnitz ( Munich). After that he went as a Senior Research Fellow at CalTech Pasadena (USA). From there he followed in 1967 a professorship at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where he remained until his retirement in 1997.

In particular, the Mössbauer spectroscopy shaped his scientific life. He is the founder of the conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy, which he used initially in nuclear physics ( nuclear moments ) and later reinforced in materials science ( isomeric ).

The study myonischer atoms at CERN and the parity violation in gamma decay and positron research at the Society for Heavy Ion Research (GSI ), are also his research interests.

The miniaturized Mössbauer spectrometer ( MIMOS ) was developed in the research group of Egbert Kankeleit. MIMOS is successfully used in the current Mars missions.

The interdisciplinary working group on science, technology and security IANUS was founded by Egbert Kankeleit together with colleagues from other faculties into life. Based on scientific and technical issues that form the basis of the research group, illuminated IANUS also ethical issues such as the role and responsibility of the scientist in the nuclear age. As part of the peace research, IANUS employed, for example, issues of non- proliferation of nuclear materials. The group was honored in 2000 by the Göttingen Peace Prize.
