Largest natural lake Aargau

Although the Egelsee is hardly bigger than a pond, he is regarded as the largest natural lake which lies entirely in the canton of Aargau ( Switzerland ). For the region Mutschellen Limmat and he is known as a popular recreational area.

Location

The small lake is located in a pine forest on the eastern flank of the Heitersberg between the Limmat and the Reuss valley to 667 m above sea level. M. in the municipality of Bergdietikon. On the western side there are very steep up to the 700 m high Heitersbergkrete.

The lake can be reached only on foot or by bicycle. The nearest train station Berikon - Widen on the Mutschellen pass is around 90 minutes walk away. The entire area is well served by footpaths.

Formation

The lake was formed at the end of the last ice age and was formerly almost three times as large. The southern part of the lake is but silted up and there was a dense reeds / marsh area.

Special

Due to the fantastic location in a dark pine forest, many stories and legends have grown around the lake. A legend tells that befände the ruins of an old knight's castle on the lake bottom. In the dark water, many people are already drowned and the bodies were often swallowed up by the peaty soil forever.
