Egyptian Shura Council election, 2007

Elections to the Shura Council, the upper house of the Egyptian parliament were held in Egypt on 11 June and on 18 June 2007.

Of the total 264 seats 88 are elected every three years, and 44 more appointed by the President.

There were 587 candidates for 88 seats in 24 provinces. The main parties were the National Democratic Party (109 candidates) and the forbidden Islamist Muslim Brotherhood ( whose 19 candidates competed as independents - President Hosni Mubarak failed in an attempt to disqualify 17 of them). The elections were boycotted by the New Wafd Party and the Nasserist Party.

Egyptian media reported that 11 of the 88 seats were won uncontested by the National Democratic Party. Overall, the NDP won 70 seats in the first round of the election, while a seat at a Independents and a Unionist to the National Progressive Party ( commonly known as " Tadschammu " ) went. The turnout was 23 percent. Of the 16 given in the second round seats the NDP won 14, while Independent gained another two. The result was a total number of 84 seats for the NDP, three for Independent and one for the Tadschammu.

The violence on Election Day led to the death of a supporter of the independent candidates in the province of East, after fighting with supporters of the NDP.
