Ehrenbreitsteiner

Ehrenbreitsteiner is a white grape variety that was bred in 1964 at the Geisenheim Research Institute in Geisenheim by Helmut Becker. It is a cross between the varieties Ehrenfelser x Reichensteiner. Becker's basic idea was to develop new varieties that would prove more resistant to phylloxera and fungi than the traditional vines. In this context, in addition to the Ehrenbreitsteiner include the new varieties named Dakapo, principal, Rondo and Saphira. The variety received the 1994 Plant Variety Protection and was recorded in the same year in the list of varieties. The wine is grown not on the Ehrenbreitstein. With Koblenz Becker also had no substantial connection. Rather, the name is explained from a blending of the parental varieties with free association of the middle morpheme in a tribute to the famous defense on the Rhine.

There are small wooded land in Germany, Canada, Austria, Hungary and Italy. In the wine market, the variety plays only a minor role.

The wine type flavor reminiscent of a Riesling, but sees with its greenish- yellow color is different. It grows less demanding in Müller -Thurgau documents. This variety ripens about two weeks earlier than the Riesling and produces fragrant, acid- driven wines (→ acid (wine) ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is easy to moderately hairy white wool. The young leaves are light green and light bronze mottled ( Anthocyanflecken ).
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed. The petiole is closed V-shaped. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are coarse in comparison to the varieties. (Also called lamina ) The leaf surface is medium strong vesicular coarse.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is rarely shouldered, small to medium size and moderately dichtbeerig. The roundish berries are small to medium in size and of a yellow-green color.

The Ehrenbreitsteiner drives from mid-late and is therefore not very sensitive to any late spring frosts. He is distinguished with good maturity of the wood from a good winter hardiness. The variety is very susceptible to powdery mildew and moderately susceptible to downy mildew and gray mold against.
