Einar Arnórsson

Einar Arnórsson ( born February 24, 1880 † March 29, 1955 ) was an Icelandic politician of the Independence Party ( Sjálfstæðisflokkur ) and Prime Minister of Iceland.

Biography

After school he studied law at the University of Copenhagen, where he graduated in 1906 with the graduation. After his return, he initially worked as a journalist and as such 1907 to 1911 editor of the newspaper title " Fjallkonan ". Following that followed until 1915 a appointed professor of law at the University of Iceland ( Háskóli Íslands ).

His political career began in 1914 with his election as Members of the Althing, in which he initially until 1919 represented the interests of the old Independence Party. On 4 May 1915 he was Prime Minister of Iceland ( Ráðherrar Íslands ), succeeding his party colleague Sigurdur Eggerz. This office he held as the last prime minister under the self-government by the Danish motherland almost one and a half years until January 4, 1917 and then handed it to Jón Magnússon, the first Prime Minister of an independent state Iceland, which deals with the agreement of December 1, 1918 breaking away from Denmark, but a common king ( Christian X ) was assumed.

He then returned as a professor of law back to the University of Iceland and held the chair until 1922. During this time he was also Rector of the University from 1918 to 1919. At the same time, he was back working as a journalist and editor of the newspaper from 1919 to 1920 " isafold " and " Morgunblaðið ". Between 1922 and 1928 he was first Steuerkommissionär Islands ( Skattstjóri ). Between 1929 and 1930 he was again rector of the University of Iceland. In 1930 he became editor and chief editor of the magazine " Skírnir - Tímarit Hins íslenzka Bókmenntafélags ".

Between 1931 to 1932, he was again member of the Althing, where this time he represented the interests of the Independence Party was founded in 1929 ( Sjálfstæðisflokkur ). Reason for his resignation from parliament in 1932 was his appointment to the Supreme Court ( Hæstiréttur ), where he served initially until 1942. From 1936 to 1939 he was editor of the magazine " Blanda ". On 16 December 1942, he was then ( Dómsmála -og Menntamálaráðherra ) appointed by his old college friend and current Prime Minister Björn Þórðarson as justice and education minister in his cabinet, where he remained until September 21, 1944. After leaving the government, he returned back to 1945 as a judge to the Supreme Court. Later, he was from 1950 to 1954 editor of the newspaper " Saga " and from 1951 to 1953 by " Tímarit lögfræðinga ".

His eldest daughter was born in 1908 Ingibjörg Einarsdóttir married in 1930 the writer and later Nobel Halldór Laxness, from which it was but divorced in 1944.
