Elazig [ e'lazɯ ː ] (Armenian Խարբերդ; formerly Mamûret'ül - Aziz, also called Elaziz ) is a city in Turkey with a population of 347 857 (2012 ). It is the provincial capital of the province of Elazig and lies 1067 m above sea level.

History

Elazig was initially only a hamlet near the town of Harput that increasingly lost its importance in the 19th century. Elazig was then called Agavat mezrası.

The Ottoman governor (tr: Vali ) on site, Resid Mehmed Pasha, built the hamlet of a town. Under Sultan Abdulaziz a barracks, a hospital and a governor's mansion were built. 1866, the city in honor of Sultan Abdulaziz and his five-year reign in Mamûret'ül - Aziz ( معمورة العزيز ) has been renamed. The name means something like " enriched by Abdülaziz ". 1878 three districts were separated from the province of Diyarbakır and founded the new province Mamûret'ül - Aziz.

The most important event in the early years of the Republic, was the conquest of the city on February 24, 1925 by insurgent forces in the Sheikh Said Rebellion. By the end of June, the city remained in the hands of the insurgents.

In the first census in 1927, the town had less than 20,000 inhabitants. 1934, the city was connected to the railway network. The name Mamûret'ül - Aziz shortened to elaziz. In November 1937, the Council of Ministers named by the city in Elazık what was changed in December 1937 to currently valid form of Elazig. In 1936 the city was temporarily administrative headquarters of two provinces, as the newly created province of Tunceli was administered by elaziz from. The population grew rapidly and in 1970 more than 100,000 residents were first registered.

Population

In Elazig Kurds, Turks and Zaza's life. Until the First World War there was a large Armenian community, but was wiped out by the genocide of the Armenians.
